It hurts that we missed out on Florian Wirtz to Liverpool - He would have been better off at Bayern

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge insists Florian Wirtz would have been better off joining Bayern Munich this summer rather than Liverpool.

The Bavarians had been favourites to sign the Germany international, only for him to ultimately snub their advances in favour of a switch to Anfield.

The 22-year-old joined the Reds in an initial £100m deal from Bayer Leverkusen, leaving Bayern bosses angered at missing out on the playmaker as a result.

Since seeing Wirtz join Liverpool, they have fired numerous digs in the direction of both player and club.

Wirtz has since come under-fire for a perceived ‘slow’ start to his Reds career, despite recording an assist on his debut for Hugo Ekitike in the Community Shield.

He is yet to register a goal or assist in the Premier League, while he came in for criticism back in his homeland during the September international break.

The German bluntly hit back at suggestions that he needs time to adjust to life at Liverpool in a recent interview with Sky Germany.

But Bayern legend, former CEO and current board member Rummenigge has now stuck the boot into Wirtz further.

The 69-year-old, who admits he is still stung at missing out on the highly-rated midfielder, has bitterly insisted that he believes his compatriot made the wrong decision in joining the Reds over the Bundesliga giants.

“I have to say honestly, in the case of Florian Wirtz, it still hurts, I feel sorry for him,” he told Sport Bild.

“We could have signed Woltemade.

But I also have to say: Bayern Munich are wise enough not to engage in every kind of financial madness.

“I’ve always said: We want to achieve sporting success, but please, in a serious and financially sound way.

“We have a top team, this year as well.
