Liverpool are preparing to make a significant move to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi before the end of the 2025 summer transfer window, according to former scout Mick Brown. Despite much of the current Liverpool discussion focusing on striker Alexander Isak, Guehi remains a high priority for the Reds as they look to strengthen their defensive options.
Brown, who has extensive scouting experience including at Manchester United, emphasized that Liverpool view Guehi as “just as important as Isak” for improving the squad. The club has reservations about current centre-backs such as Ibrahima Konate, who has been inconsistent and is entering the final year of his contract, and Joe Gomez, who is not seen as a long-term solution. Additionally, the departure of young defender Jarell Quansah has left a gap in defensive depth that Guehi could help fill.
Guehi, an England international, had an impressive season at Crystal Palace, playing 44 games and contributing three goals and two assists. His performances have made him a valuable target for Liverpool, who are keen to avoid taking defensive risks if they intend to compete for all available trophies in the upcoming season.
However, Crystal Palace are reportedly reluctant to sell Guehi, especially after potentially losing another key player, Eberechi Eze, to Tottenham. Brown suggests Palace may prefer to keep Guehi until his contract ends next year rather than risk losing two major talents simultaneously so late in the transfer window. This stance could force Liverpool to either meet a high asking price or wait until Guehi becomes a free agent in 2026.
Despite these complexities, reports indicate Liverpool are “accelerating” their efforts in a potential £220 million triple deal that includes Guehi, Isak, and Giovanni Leoni, signaling strong intent to bolster both defensive and offensive lines ahead of the new season.
