For many clubs outside the European elite, survival is not just about results on the pitch.
It is about balancing books, cutting debts, and waiting for a break.
In Serie B, where competition is fierce and promotion is always the dream, money can often decide whether a team strengthens or struggles.
Signing players is one thing, keeping them is another.
Some teams have even been close to dropping to the third tier, with finances just as much of a threat as poor form.
That is why unexpected boosts, often from transfer deals involving former players, can feel like lifelines.
These clauses, sometimes overlooked when players move on, suddenly become crucial when a big transfer takes place elsewhere.
And that is exactly what is happening now thanks to Liverpool’s latest move in the market.
Liverpool have signed Parma defender Giovanni Leoni in a €35m deal.
The 18-year-old only joined Parma last summer from Sampdoria for around €4m.
While Parma are set for a huge return on their investment, with reports saying “they can stand to earn over €25m after amortisation,” this transfer is also good news for Sampdoria.
According to Italian newspaper Secolo XIX, relayed by PianetaSerieB, “the Serie B side are set to get a percentage of the 18-year-old’s transfer to Liverpool.”
That means Sampdoria are now expected to pocket around €2.5m from the deal.
For a club that “were on the verge of relegation to Serie C” not too long ago, this comes as a timely relief.
The same report points out that “the lack of funds is holding them back from making new signings this summer.”
So while Parma celebrate a major profit and Liverpool secure a promising defender, Sampdoria will quietly welcome what feels like a small but vital bonus.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are adding one of Italy’s top young defenders, and in doing so have indirectly thrown Sampdoria a lifeline in their fight to stabilize.
