Daniel Levy has been tipped to continue working at Tottenham in some capacity after his ground-breaking departure as executive chairman of the club.

Nottingham Forest target Ange Postecoglou‘s sacking after delivering Europa League glory saw the club step in a new direction with the hiring of former Brentford manager Thomas Frank.

The Dane has so far started well, winning two of his three games in charge and is now preparing to give a debut to new Tottenham signing Xavi Simons after the international break.

However, the new boss will now have to continue his Spurs career without the leadership of former Tottenham executive chairman Levy who “bizarrely” stepped down from his role today.

Speaking on talkSPORT (4 September, 5:55pm), former Spurs striker Darren Bent gave his immediate view on the unthinkable happening at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It was a day that the ex-striker thought would never come, saying: “It’s huge, I never thought I’d actually see the day that it’d happen because he’s been there for so long.

“The fans have non-stop complained about him for years and years and it just felt like he was an irremovable object.

“The fact he has decided to step down, perhaps he has decided he can’t do the job as well as he maybe once could.

“Maybe he feels the club is going in a different direction that he feels needs to.”

Bent did feel though that this wasn’t the end for Levy at the club as he added: “I just can’t see him just step away completely… I think he will still have a role to play there [Tottenham].

“Maybe over time he might distance himself a little bit, but I don’t think that would be the right thing to do either.”

Football Insider verdict

Whilst the former chairman has been integral to turning the Lilywhites into better competitors at the top of the table, the time was right for Levy to step down.

He has been notorious for his “penny-pinching” tactics which has seen the north London side miss out on major marquee signings across his tenure.

I wonder whether the failings to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace and Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest was the nail in the coffin for Levy.

He may have come to a stark realisation that his negotiation skills and bargaining too hard has had a detrimental effect on the reputation of the club.

Losing Eze to Arsenal, in particular, really annoyed Tottenham fans who all blamed the ex-chairman for taking too long to get the Englishman.

Regardless, Levy will go down as a monumental figure for the Lilywhites but it is the correct decision for the 63-year-old to step down.
