Liverpool have completed the signing of Sweden striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a British-record transfer worth £125 million. This deal surpasses the previous Premier League record set by Chelsea's £115 million acquisition of Moisés Caicedo in 2023. Isak has signed a six-year contract at Anfield and will wear the number 9 shirt.
The transfer ends one of the longest-running sagas of the 2025 summer window, with Isak having publicly expressed his desire to leave Newcastle. He did not participate in Newcastle's preseason tour and made clear his dissatisfaction by stating the club had broken promises. Isak joined Newcastle in 2022 from Real Sociedad and made 109 appearances for the club.
Liverpool's summer transfer spending has now reached approximately £446 million, with £228 million recouped in player sales, leading to a net spend of around £218 million. This marks the second time Liverpool have broken their transfer record this summer, having previously signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100 million plus add-ons.
Upon signing, Isak expressed his enthusiasm to join Liverpool, emphasizing his commitment to contribute goals and overall team success. He stated, "I'm super happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for... I want to win everything."
