Jack Butland has sent an excited response to Djeidi Gassama after he fired Rangers to glory in the Champions League.

The Russell Martin era has arrived at Rangers, with the ex-Southampton head-coach now in charge at Ibrox and aiming to return the Gers to Scottish Premiership glory in his first season at the helm.

Martin has been busy this summer shaping his squad for the his maiden campaign, with Max Aarons recently sealing a move to Ibrox from Bournemouth, while Cherries midfielder Joe Rothwell has also joined Rangers and Luton Town playmaker Thelo Aasgaard has also moved north of the border.

The new Gers boss is clearly sticking to what he knows, which is the top two tiers of English football, and Gassama has joined also Rangers from Sheffield Wednesday this summer amid chaos at Hillsborough that could see the Owls kicked out of the Championship.

Gassama netted a superb solo goal on his competitive debut against Panathanikos in the Champions League second qualifying round (22 July), and he also delivered the goods in the return leg for the Gers to mark a fantastic start at his new club.

The 21-year-old repeated the trick for Rangers in Greece on Wednesday (30 July), as he scored a fine half-volley to level the score on the night at 1-1 and make it 3-1 to Martin’s side on aggregate.

His second strike for the club in as many competitive games was enough to see them through to the next round of UCL qualifiers, and Gassama reacted to the win with a message to the supporters on Instagram alongside some pictures of him in action (Thursday, 31 July), saying: “Next round!!

Let’s go guys We deserve this” with a blue heart emoji.

The winger’s post drew a response from Gers goalkeeper Butland, who replied: “gas man” with a fuel pump emoji, while Rangers’ official account left a fire emoji in the comments and former teammate Jamal Lowe added a blue heart emoji.

Football Insider verdict

Gassama was one of the most highly-rated young wingers in the Championship during his time at Sheffield Wednesday, and so it comes as little surprise to see him taking to life at Rangers with aplomb under Martin.

While he is naturally a left winger who likes to cut in on his right foot, he can play on either side and at attacking midfield, which is similar to another young Gers talent in McCausland.

The Northern Ireland international has impressed on occasion since his breakthrough into the senior side in 2022, but his output has been poor, and Gassama already looks to be streets ahead in that aspect.

Football Insider recently revealed that McCausland is being tracked by a number of clubs in England, Europe and the MLS, and it is the former Owls man’s recent arrival and good initial form that looks to have pushed him out of the exit door at Ibrox.
