Tottenham face another summer transfer test with James Maddison picking up a serious-looking knee injury during pre-season.

The attacking midfielder was stretchered off and in tears in the second half of the 1-1 friendly draw with Newcastle.

Spurs boss Thomas Frank described it as a 'bad injury' and confirmed it was the same knee that sidelined Maddison near the end of last season.

Maddison looks set for a lengthy absence, and so the Europa League champions could delve back into the market for a new option.

Having missed out on Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, talkSPORT's Alex Crook has revealed three potential alternatives for Spurs to explore.

talkSPORT reported in June that Grealish has accepted his career at Manchester City is over.

The winger was left out of their Club World Cup squad and has had interested from West Ham and Everton.

Spurs have held a genuine interest too as Crook said: "Jack Grealish was a topic of conversation at Spurs at the start of the summer.

"It went quite quiet in that regard," he added, although Grealish may still be an option as the transfer window progresses.

After Manchester United improved their offer for Bryan Mbeumo, Spurs began to focus their efforts on Crystal Palace star man Eze.

However, Arsenal held talks with the 27-year-old's camp as they eyed a new left-wing option before signing Noni Madueke from Chelsea.

The Gunners' interest in Eze appeared to scupper Spurs' hopes of a deal for Palace's FA Cup final hero.

Crook said: "I think when Arsenal came to the table, Tottenham retreated because they feared that they would be hijacked by their north London rivals."

Earlier in the summer, West Ham held talks with Liverpool over Elliott after his heroics for the England U21s at the Euros.

But the Reds have set an asking price of £40m for the 22-year-old, who has struggled for regular minutes at Anfield.

And with Florian Wirtz now at Liverpool after his British record move worth £116.5m, an exit looks likely.

"The other name I'd keep an eye on when it comes to Spurs actually is Harvey Elliott at Liverpool," Crook said.

"He's another player that Liverpool are willing to cash in on, he had a brilliant summer leading the England Under-21s to European Championship glory.

"He won't be cheap, I think the asking price is about £40million, maybe north of that.

But obviously, they were willing to pay £60m for Gibbs-White.

"And he just strikes me, Harvey Elliott, as a very Thomas Frank-type signing."

Spurs have signed Kevin Danso, Mathys Tel, Luka Vuskovic, Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus so far this summer.

They also completed the loan signing of Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich on Sunday.
