Tottenham defender Cristian Romero shared an emotional message to supporters following a significant update on his future at the club.

Romero endured a frustrating campaign at Spurs last season, with a series of injuries disrupting his rhythm and halting any momentum he was able to build.

In recent months, the Argentine has attracted attention from several top clubs.

Football Insider previously reported that both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid had expressed interest in Romero, although no major steps had been taken towards a deal.

With the Premier League season now just days away, speculation around his future has quietened.

Now, a decision has been made on Romero, likely bringing an end to the uncertainty that had surrounded him over the summer.

With Heung-Min Son leaving Tottenham for MLS side LAFC, the club have confirmed a new leader will take the armband for the upcoming campaign.

Spurs officially announced that Romero will be their new captain, with the Argentine describing it as a “special time” in his career and declaring that “nothing is impossible”.

The announcement drew plenty of reaction from teammates, with James Maddison commenting: “My skipper” and Destiny Udogie writing “Capitano”.

Pedro Porro, Dominic Solanke and fellow Argentina international Emiliano Martinez were among those who liked the post.

The decision has sparked some debate, with former Chelsea and West Ham left-back Scott Minto questioning whether Romero is the right choice for captain due to his on-field temperament.

Nevertheless, with speculation over a potential move to Spain now easing, Spurs are reportedly preparing to offer Romero a new long-term contract.

However, his fitness will undoubtedly remain a concern as he missed 27 matches last season due to three separate injuries.

Despite many changes at the club, Tottenham’s summer overhaul is far from complete, with transfer activity still ongoing.

Football Insider reported on 12 August that Savinho is eager to join Spurs this summer, with talks continuing between the club and Manchester City.

The 21-year-old winger had a rotational role in his debut season and is understood to be open to the move, with Tottenham ready to offer him more regular minutes as they look to strengthen their attacking options.
