James Pearce has been attempting to shed light on why Liverpool have encountered a rough patch of form in such a critical stage of the season.
The Reds returned from the international break in sole possession of first place and expecting to beat Atalanta across the two legs.
Fast-forward two weeks later, and Liverpool are trailing Man City by two points with their European campaign hanging by a thread.
It has been a tough spell for Jurgen Klopp’s men, with one point gained from a possible six against the likes of Manchester United and Crystal Palace.
The 1-0 loss to the Eagles at Anfield was particularly demoralising, and the Reds boss will hope that his team can give a proper reaction in Bergamo on Thursday night.
What did James Pearce say about Liverpool?
According to insights shared on the Walk On podcast by The Athletic reporter Pearce, recent months have reportedly taken an emotional toll on Liverpool, as per discussions with sources.
Among the players highlighted to have faced difficulties, Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai were specifically mentioned as having encountered challenges.
The Athletic journalist said:
“I think that showed it’s almost like a bit of a perfect storm in a way because then you’ve got other players who have come back from injury and they just clearly lacking rhythm.”
“You’d certainly put Salah in that category.
Of course, we’ve seen Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and [Diogo] Jota coming back after long periods out”
He also mentioned the fact that Liverpool always have to work hard for the result plays a part, often falling behind first in games and then having to make the comeback:
“But I think from speaking to people as well, just how emotionally draining the last few months has played a part.”
“When was the last time that Liverpool won at a canter and were able to ease off and effectively just enjoy the last 20/30 minutes of a match with no jeopardy?”
“I think it’s probably the 4-1 win at Brentford when they were ahead at halftime and had the points wrapped up by 60/70 minutes.”
As Liverpool aim to orchestrate a remarkable comeback against Atalanta, Klopp must strategize to maintain his players’ full concentration despite recent disappointments in form.
The Reds still harbor hopes of clinching the Premier League title, underscoring the urgency for Klopp and his squad to reverse their fortunes.
