During an ongoing spending spree that currently stands close to £300m, if you include performance-related add-ons, Liverpool have added some serious firepower to their squad so far this summer.
Talented young full-backs Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have arrived, whilst big money deals for creative midfielder Florian Wirtz and striker Hugo Ekitike have been agreed.
Whilst that is all very well and good, there is another concern that continues to rear its head as Liverpool’s pre-season develops.
Yesterday saw Liverpool lose 4-2 to AC Milan in Hong Kong, and a worry emerged about the depth in Liverpool’s heart of defence.
With Joe Gomez heading back to Liverpool to nurse a new injury related to his Achilles, and Jarell Quansah departing on a permanent deal to Bayer Leverkusen, the club are left with two fit senior centre-backs.
Because of this, Arne Slot had to turn to Ryan Gravenberch and Kostas Tsimikas to fill in for him, something he will not want to become a recurring theme once the season starts.
Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are nailed on starters and more than capable of doing a solid job all season long, but if either get injured, then questions will begin to be asked as to why Liverpool didn’t prioritise the signing of a centre-back during this summer of significant change.
James Pearce supports this idea.
In a recent article for The New York Times, he said: “Buying a centre-back should be at the top of Liverpool’s remaining priorities in this summer of change at Anfield.”
“There has been no extra cover recruited for the heart of the back line?
Liverpool have long since been looking for a talented young centre-back who could develop and grow into the role.”
This is very much correct, as Levi Colwill, Leny Yoro and Dean Huijsen have all been named as players that Liverpool expressed an interest in in recent years, before all of them decided their future lied away from Anfield.
We exclusively revealed at the start of July that Liverpool had agreed personal terms with Marc Guehi, but any further developments about that situation have since gone quiet.
Liverpool have been eager to improve their attacking line this summer, but a priority must also be placed on building centre-back depth.
