Josh Cullen was the subject of a brand-new announcement from Burnley that caught the attention of past and present teammates.

Scott Parker‘s side are gearing up for a difficult 2025/26 Premier League campaign after securing promotion out of the Championship, going level on 100 points with Leeds United last term.

Sunderland finally joined the duo after defeating Sheffield United in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium, with Granit Xhaka becoming the latest arrival at the Stadium of Light.

Cullen was a key part of last season’s success because, while he only notched five goal contributions in the Championship, his ever-present nature in the centre of midfield was important for the team.

Now, he appears set for another impressive role in the Premier League, leading a talented team into the top tier of English football, hoping to avoid relegation straight back down like under Vincent Kompany.

Taking to Instagram (31 July), the official club account wrote: “We are pleased to announce that Josh Cullen has been appointed as squad captain ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season.”

After running down his contract at Turf Moor, Josh Brownhill is of interest to Leeds and Leicester City, with Trafford rejoining his former club just two years after arriving at Burnley.

CJ Egan-Riley has also found a new team in Marseille, but deals for Jacob Bruun Larsen, Kyle Walker, Loum Tchaouna, Quilindschy Hartman, Max Weiss, and Axel Tuanzebe have settled nerves this summer.

Parker’s record in the Premier League certainly cannot be ignored, but with so much activity in the summer transfer market, supporters will believe he can achieve success next season.

The Clarets are already preparing for the season ahead with friendlies against Shrewsbury and Huddersfield Town, but until Cullen leads the team out, nobody will be able to predict their finishing spot.

Football Insider understands that Burnley are the favourites to sign Sam Johnstone from Wolves, and that would certainly give the team enough experience at the back for next season.
