Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has aimed a hilarious dig at rivals Manchester United after their UEFA Europa League loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.
Spurs continued the trend of what has been a remarkable season of many firsts by beating Manchester United to end their 17-year wait for a major trophy.
Although Manchester United enjoyed more possession on the night, Tottenham did enough to win the game, scoring with their only shot on target.
In wining the trophy Tottenham now joins Liverpool as the second English team to have won three UEFA Cup/Europa League titles in their history.
Meanwhile, Tottneham are enduring one of their worst seasons in history, having already lost 21 times this season.
The only reason they are not in the relegation battle is because of the poor quality of the bottom three.
Their opponent on Wednesday, Manchester United, are also enduring their worst season in Premier League history, suffering 18 defeats of their own to leave them with just 39 points, one point ahead of 17th-placed Spurs.
Meeting in the final afforded both sides the chance of seizing the opprutinity of playing in the UEFA Champions League next season.
It was the North London side who took the chance, with their 1-0 win in Bilbao meaning they will play in the Champions League next season despite their lowly league position ahead of the Red Devils, who they have beaten four times this season alone.
After the loss, Jamie Carragher took to social media to aim a hilarious dig at Manchester United.
“Lads, it’s Man United!” he wrote on X.
Meanwhile, the result means that Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has delivered on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season, an achievement that drew a classy message from Mohamed Salah.
Earlier this campaign, the Australian, having just seen his side lose 1-0 at home to rivals Arsenal back in September, was in defiant mood and that quote has followed and been repeated to him all season.
“Usually in my second season, I win things,” he said.
“That’s the whole idea.
Hopefully, the second year is going on to win things.”
Postecoglou even doubled down on his claim during the pre-match press conference for the final.
Asked about the comments in September, he went further, telling Sky Sports: “I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year?
Nothing’s changed.”
He has now delivered on his promise and has coached Spurs to their first trophy since their Carabao Cup win in 2008.
