Uncertainty surrounding Isak's future was the backdrop for the contest - with no resolution over the situation at the club - after he felt like promises had been broken leading up to the saga.
Reports indicate that the Newcastle hierarchy met with the Sweden international seeking to resolve the situation, in a bid for him to stay at the club as they face mounting problems up front.

On Monday, Anthony Gordon was sent off for a wild lunge on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, which will see him miss the next three matches.
The England international was viewed a stop-gap while Isak remained out of the squad and the recruitment team at St James' Park acquired their attacking targets.
However, Henry's stance changed after the forward's suspension joined their mounting issues - after Fabian Schar, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali were forced off injured.
"I think he's been saying to them since the beginning that he has to stay," said the French icon.
"Sometimes when you're the club and you're the manager, sometimes it's out of your hands what's happening but the solution might be him saying.
"It looked like the best thing for everyone to leave but maybe if he apologised and come back, maybe he can stay but because of the situation that happened, with all of the injuries, even more so you make him stay."
Carragher, who has disagreed with Liverpool's stance to spend big on Isak, conceded that it might be best for all parties if Newcastle cashed in on the striker in order to avoid affecting squad harmony and reinvest.
"I think there will be a feeling amongst supporters that Liverpool have just done us in the last minute, they're not getting our man - that type of feeling," he argued.
"Anthony Gordon being out for three games doesn't help the situation - in terms of Liverpool getting their hands on him - but I think it comes down if Newcastle can get their hands on two forwards this week, and they've put a bit in for [Jorgen Strand] Larson so they're obviously looking to bring forwards in.
"I think if they bring two forwards, I think they do sell him to Liverpool and get the money in.
"What they've got up there, since Eddie Howe come in, it's something pretty special in terms of the pitch and the crowd - it goes back to those [Kevin] Keegan days, you see that fight in the second-half, they can't have someone between now and the next transfer window diminish that.
"If he's not willing to give everything, he's saying he's injured when he's fully fit or not training right, there will be a cloud over your club and Eddie Howe will be asked that press conference after press conference.
"I actually think it's in the best interests to Newcastle to sell him.
"That's not me as a Liverpool fan, I'm not 100 per cent with the Isak transfer, but I'm just thinking of my experience being in those situations, get your two strikers in and get as much money as you can and keep creating the energy they've got right now.
"The Gordon situation maybe changes it but I'm thinking from Eddie Howe's point of view, he's the one who has to go in the press conferences twice a week getting asked about Alexander Isak twice a week."
Legendary Arsenal striker, Henry, argued that, at some point during the ongoing transfer saga, the Newcastle No.14 has to take a look at himself and have honest conversations about what he truly wants.
Henry floated the idea of apologising for his conduct and fighting to restore faith from the Magpies' supporters.
He said: "We've all been in dressing rooms, I made mistakes and I accept it enough, if someone is honest enough to do it and say; 'I wanted to leave, it didn't happen but I will be fully committed to the cause - I'm sorry'.
"I've seen guys that really wanted to go, stay, but couldn't get over it because they didn't really accept the decision they've taken.
"They were sorry, but they didn't accept it.
"I've also seen players miss a transfer, Luis Suarez was supposed to go to Arsenal, he stayed and had a great season so I do believe at one point he needs to have a honest conversation with himself.
"At one point, you need to sit and have a conversation with yourself, 'what do I want'?
"The situation of Isak, losing that game, you played two games really well but you have nothing to show."
Carragher added that Newcastle have more to lose regarding their manager, Howe, than Isak.

He said: "The manager is more important than Isak.
"He's a special, special football manager, the job he has done from where they was to where they are now...
"I'm not saying they're going to lose the manager but.
if you're talking about players or manager going, he's much more important than Isak."
