Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher doesn't believe that Alexander Isak will come into Arne Slot's starting XI this weekend against Burnley.

While Isak did play 18 minutes for Sweden in their defeat to Kosovo on Monday night, Carragher believes the Burnley tie has come too soon for the 25-year-old to be included from the start.

Discussing the weekend's games on the Stick to Football podcast, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville asked if Isak "comes straight in." Carragher emphatically replied: "No, no.

He only come on for 20 minutes for Sweden."

Neville then insisted that Isak had "trained for two weeks" and seemed surprised that Liverpool's newest recruit wouldn't feature from the off against the Clarets.

Isak actually trained with some of his Liverpool team-mates for the first time on Wednesday.

He was spotted on the Kirkby pitches, and in the gym, with the likes of Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong and Federico Chiesa, while the majority of Liverpool's first-team will be back in training on Thursday.

Shortly after signing for the club, undergoing a medical and performing media tasks, Isak was swiftly whisked away on international duty.

While the forward looked relatively sharp for his country, the former Newcastle man has previously erred on the side of caution when it comes to making his debut after missing pre-season, and the start of the new campaign, as he angled for his move.

"Yeah, of course," Isak responded when asked by club media if he's aiming for Liverpool's game against Burnley on September 14 to be his maiden appearance for his new club.

However, hinting at a possible delay, he added: "I think that's the ambition.

But I certainly want to play as soon as possible."

Fans will no doubt be left disappointed if Isak remains on the bench or even out of the squad entirely on Sunday.

However, if he fails to feature at the weekend, he could make his bow against Atletico Madrid at Anfield next Wednesday in the club's first Champions League fixture of the season.

Isak also has the chance to make a mouth-watering home Premier League debut against local rivals Everton a week on Saturday, September 20.

Fans will get more of an insight later this week into Isak's condition when Slot will give an update on his new striker's fitness in his pre-match press conference for the tie against Burnley.
