Jamie Carragher said that the Alexander Isak situation "feels a bit messy" and questioned whether Liverpool planned to continue its pursuit of the Swede after signing Hugo Ekitike.
It did seem as though Ekitike's move to Anfield last month would spell the end of Liverpool's chances of signing Isak this summer, not least because the acquisition of Ekitike took Liverpool's spend during this window to around $400 million.
But over the following days it emerged that Isak was keen to leave Newcastle after ruling himself out of the club's pre-season tour of Asia.
Liverpool saw a bid of $146 million for Isak rejected by Newcastle last week, with the Magpies valuing the player at closer to the $200 million mark.

Isak would undoubtedly cost Liverpool a Premier League record fee, and Carragher has questioned Liverpool's thinking behind its continued interest in the 25-year-old - especially after the signing of Ekitike.
“In terms of what Liverpool have done in the summer by bringing in players, they’ve spent a lot of money and it doesn’t feel like the Liverpool way of doing things so much," Carragher said on The Overlap.
"Or certainly if you listen to some supporters who have been on the owner’s case for so long!
“He [Alexander Isak] will be an amazing signing, but from a fan’s point of view for myself, I don’t want Liverpool to spend £150 million on Isak.

I know Liverpool need numbers, for a number of reasons, at the top of the pitch.
“I look at Isak, and he’s obviously thrown his toys out the pram once Arsenal signed a striker and Liverpool signed a striker
For me, when I think of Liverpool, it doesn’t look really planned – I don’t think the plan is to buy a striker for £80 million, and then be looking to buy another one for £120 million.”
Liverpool's chances of signing Isak appear to have taken a blow after it emerged that Benjamin Sesko, the player that Newcastle appears to have targeted as a possible replacement for Isak, wants to join Manchester United.
Sesko has reportedly agreed personal terms with United over a move to Old Trafford, with an agreement between United and RB Leipzig over a fee not expected to be an issue.
