However, former Reds defender Carragher believes that a possible quadruple was always unrealistic, revealing that he had wished for the club to be knocked out of the cup against Arsenal in the third round.

“When you’re saying, ‘stopped the quadruple’, no club has ever done it before.

I go back to what Liverpool did a couple of years ago when they ended up losing out on the two biggest ones in the Premier League and Champions League,” Carragher said on The Overlap Fan Debate, sponsored by Sky Bet.

“I don’t think there was any way that Liverpool were going to win four trophies.

I think the two-week break, surely that can help you slightly in terms of the league.”

The majority of Liverpool’s efforts will go into the Premier League title race and the Reds face a slightly easier schedule than Arsenal and Man City, who are both still competing in the Champions League.

Carragher pointed out that the team’s FA Cup exit has slightly eased their congested fixture list, which could give Liverpool a slight boost in the league.

“If Liverpool had gone through, I think they would’ve had a midweek game every single week if they get to the Europa League final,” Carragher added.

I think in that season a couple of years ago, Liverpool completely ran out of steam in the last couple of weeks of the season.”
