Jamie Carragher reckons that Dominik Szoboszlai has at last "found his position" at right-back - proposing the Hungarian is considerably more impactful in defence than he was operating as an attacking midfielder.

The Liverpool player found the net as the Reds defeated Arsenal at the weekend, delivering a magnificent free-kick from beyond 30 yards in front of the Kop.

Szoboszlai's effort ricocheted in via the post to overcome David Raya and secured him the Player of the Match accolade.

Szoboszlai was recruited by Jurgen Klopp two years ago after shining at RB Leipzig and was predominantly a creative force from the middle of the park.

That represents a role he had filled at Anfield until this campaign, with Arne Slot repositioning him back to the right-back berth.

He possesses minimal experience in the position, but Liverpool must fill voids following Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure and Jeremie Frimpong's injury, though Carragher thinks it might become a fresh permanent base.

He commented on social media: "Nine pts from nine is a great return for LFC after playing two of their toughest games, that were both drawn last season.

Gary Neville was full of praise for Szoboszlai during his commentary on Liverpool's victory, even awarding him Player of the Match before his stunning free-kick

I play where he puts me, try to give my best, and help the team."

The summer signing of Florian Wirtz has seen the German seamlessly fit into the role of Liverpool's playmaker, and Slot has been greatly impressed with how Szoboszlai has adapted to his unexpected challenge.

"He's always been the player that I think he understands what a Liverpool player should look like," said the Reds boss

And today I don't think he did anything wrong.

"Unbelievable game from him in the position he probably paid only two or three times in his life, so it tells you a lot about the mentality he has."
