Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has criticised the reaction for Trent Alexander-Arnold during their 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.

There was an audible disgruntlement toward the defender with Conor Bradley's name being chanted following his introduction.

And Carragher has taken aim at a section of the Liverpool supporters who opted to boo their two-time Premier League-winning full-back.

"That's the story of the game, everyone will be talking about it, it'll be on every back page tomorrow," said the former defender.

"I'm surprised how many.

In a crowd of 60,000, there's no doubt there will be a lot of unhappy people with the situation, that's understandable.

"Away at Leicester there was a few boos there but I don't believe any player putting on that red shirt, trying to get three points or win a trophy should be booed.

"I understand there's a lot of ill-feeling, I get that, some people outside of Liverpool can't grasp that, I do, but booing one of your own players is not for me."

Arne Slot made the decision to drop the England international to the bench for Sunday's showdown with their nearest challengers.

The Dutchman revealed before the game that the decision was made with a view to next season following Alexander-Arnold's decision to turn down a Liverpool extension.

"No not a reaction, the fact that he's leaving, that's one of the reasons to play Conor," said Slot.

"But not a reaction, if that crossed my mind maybe I'd have taken him out of the squad.

"I think the people expect me to bring a squad where there is a chance to win the game, the fans want this, the players want to win the game so I have to select a team capable to do so.

"If Conor is not ready to play 90 then I am happy that I can bring Trent on if needed."

The Dutchman added that he wasn't sure what reaction Alexander-Arnold would get but urged that supporting every Liverpool player would have a better impact.

He continued: "It's difficult for me, everyone at Liverpool has a different opinion on that..

"Some fans [will say] we have to give him what he deserved in terms of what he did for the club and there are fans who are more negative about him leaving the club.

"I don't know how they're going to react.

"What do I know, the best way to help us and the team is to help everyone who wears a Liverpool shirt."
