And the awkward moment occurred just minutes before kick-off, as Neville was caught out by an ad break ending.

But it came at a bad time for the ex-Man United defender, who could be heard speaking about the Leeds fans with Carragher and co.

Footage of the home support was being shown and Neville said in discussion with host David Jones: "They are the one group of fans I wouldn't want to go anywhere near."

The presenters then instantly burst out in laughter as they realised that the words not meant for camera were broadcast live on TV.

Neville then added whilst chuckling: "Did you hear that?"

He quickly stood by his comment and repeated it before more laughter filled the studio in a very funny pre-match moment.

Host Jones then moved things swiftly on, saying: "I don't think they want you anywhere near them either, so it's fine!"

After the game, Carragher couldn't help to bring up the mistake again whilst watching Leeds fans celebrating their win, with Neville joking: "Thankfully I'm not with them!"

"You're not going to let him live this down, are you?" Jones said to Carragher as the trio burst out laughing yet again.

Neville has previously spoken about his 'fear' of Leeds fans and Elland Road when looking back on his playing career.

Speaking in 2020, the former right-back admitted: “Particularly when we went to play at Leeds, it was brutal.

“Probably more brutal than Liverpool in some ways.

"There’s a little bit of respect between Liverpool and Manchester, but with Leeds, it just felt like there was a real nastiness – like they would come on the pitch if they could, it was that type of feeling.”

Neville added: “Leeds, I always felt was a huge club when we were playing against them, I always felt it was a big club.

"When people ask ‘what is a big club?’, I always think Leeds United, because it’s just the feeling you get when you go and play football there, it’s unbelievable, it’s different, it’s a different place to play football."

It was a perfect start back in the Premier League for Leeds on Monday as they beat Everton 1-0.

Grealish could not make an impact though, and Leeds went on to win a late penalty after a controversial handball from James Tarkowski.

And that was enough to get the job done, making it three points in their opening game of the new season.
