Jamie Carragher has said Alexander Isak will assume a role at Liverpool of similar importance to Mohamed Salah when he finally gets up and running.
The striker was omitted from the squad on Sunday at Burnley due to his lack of fitness, with Arne Slot likening his current levels to that of the second or third week of pre-season training.
The Dutchman also said Isak will be an option off the bench for the midweek fixture against Atletico Madrid.
That said, it will be a while until Isak is back up to full fitness.
Hugo Ekitike will operate as a no.9 in the meantime, although his long-term role looks less certain.
Most expect Liverpool’s record signing to play up front when Isak is firing on all cylinders, meaning Ekitike could be relegated to a back-up spot less than two months after his £79M ($107M) arrival from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Carragher, speaking before Sunday’s encounter at Turf Moor, said he still expects Ekitike to play a significant part this season.
“Well, Isak fits in as center forward and I think that when you pay that much money for someone and he is of the quality that he is, I think it will be a similar situation to Salah that when you go to see Liverpool play you expect to see Salah play on the right and you will expect to see Isak as the center forward, and the rest will have to fit in around him,” the former center-back told Sky Sports.

That, I imagine, would be Liverpool’s first-choice front four and Ekitike could fill in for Isak and play with him at at times and from the left.
“There are plenty of games, plenty of minutes to go around and I’m sure the manager knows what he is doing.”
