Pundit Jamie Carragher has confidently predicted that Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso will become the new Liverpool manager this summer.

Liverpool were rocked in January as Jurgen Klopp announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The German has been in the Anfield dugout for more than eight years now but has decided to call time on his Liverpool career.

Klopp wants a break from football and Liverpool must now work to identify a replacement ahead of the summer transfer window.

HITC Football understands that Xabi Alonso is the preferred option inside Liverpool right now having impressed in charge of Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso is the popular choice given his history at Liverpool as a player and Jamie Carragher has now made a prediction about the Spaniard…

Alonso’s former Liverpool Carragher analysed Leverkusen’s stunning 3-0 win over Bayern Munich, taking a deep dive into Alonso’s tactical approach.

Leverkusen were sensational on Saturday evening and have now opened up a five-point gap at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Winning the game was one thing but the manner of the victory was so impressive and only sparked more calls for him to join Liverpool.

Carragher has told Sky Sports that he does believe that Alonso will become the new Liverpool manage this summer.

Carragher feels that Liverpool are somewhat ‘fortunate’ in that Klopp wants to move on just as a promising young manager with ties to the club emerges in Alonso.

The former Reds defender feels that Liverpool’s current approach doesn’t exactly marry up with Alonso’s ideology, but thinks that the move will materialise this summer.

“Bayer Leverkusen… for them to be top of anything is pretty special when you think of the squad that they’ve got, the money that’s been spent,” said Carragher.

That is probably not exactly what Liverpool are right now, under Jurgen Klopp, it’s more probably reminiscent of what we see from a Pep Guardiola team.”

“If Xabi Alonso was to become the Liverpool manager, which I think he will, I actually feel that Liverpool have been quite fortunate that Jurgen Klopp is moving on at this time, and the timing for Xabi Alonso to step in is pretty perfect with the job that he’s doing.

There Is no doubt for me, right now, he is looking like the brightest young thing out there as a manager,” he added.

Alonso is only 42 and a move to Anfield would be a huge step, but so was becoming Leverkusen boss in 2022 after previously coaching Real Sociedad’s B team.

Klopp is a tough figure to follow but Alonso would have the benefit of major immediate support from Liverpool fans given his five-year stay at the club as a player.

Add in that Alonso could become the first non-Bayern manager to win the Bundesliga since Klopp and this switch feels almost too perfect; it’s now down to Liverpool to make a move.
