Jamie Carragher makes controversial Arsenal claim - despite Liverpool £450m spending spree

Liverpool might be the reigning Premier League champions and clear at the top of the table again this season with an 100 per cent winning record, but even Reds legend Jamie Carragher does not think they currently boast the best squad in the country.

Arne Slot's side oversaw a £450m spending spree this summer as they added 10 players to their ranks, breaking the British transfer record twice in the process to sign Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

However, such spending came against the caveat of Liverpool also raising roughly £225m from player sales - as the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez all moved on.

But it ensured that it was both the busiest and costliest transfer window ever in the club's history, with the Reds spending more than any other side in the Premier League.

Yet they also received the third-most in sales, with Arsenal recording a greater net spend (£246m to £228m) as a result.

The Gunners spent £255m as they bolstered their ranks with the signings of Eberehci Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Piero Hincapie.

And after such spending, Carragher believes it is Arsenal - rather than Liverpool - that actually boast the strongest squad in England.

"I am surprised that Eze is not playing," he said on Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal's clash with Man City.

"It's not just about this left-wing situation because he could have gone inside as well, because Odegaard's missed out.

"I felt, when Eze came in, it would be for that left-wing position and one of the midfield three.

And he's chosen to go with what you might call the more hard-working player, Merino in midfield - better maybe for set-pieces if you like rather than the creative player.

"But when you look at Arsenal's subs bench, I think there are five or six players on Arsenal's bench that, if you just swapped them with the player, it would make absolutely no difference to the starting XI at all.

"I think Arsenal have the best squad in the country and I do believe that.

"Let's not forget Odegaard's out, Havertz is out and Jesus is out.

That bench is as good as their team on the pitch, there's absolutely no doubt about that and him [BuSaka] more than anyone."
