Jamie Carragher has voiced his concerns about Liverpool’s defense after seeing his former side lose the Community Shield against Crystal Palace.

The Reds missed out on a first piece of silverware in the 2025/26 season as Arne Slot’s side suffered more Wembley heartbreak, falling to a 3-2 defeat in a penalty shootout after drawing 2-2 at Wembley.

There were plenty of positives for Liverpool offensively, especially with new signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong both getting on the scoresheet, while Florian Wirtz showed some encouraging signs.

Having conceded seven goals in pre-season games against AC Milan, Yokohama and Athletic Club (second game), Liverpool was once again less than convincing at the back against Palace, with Virgil van Dijk in particular suffering an off-day as he gave away a penalty in the first half before stepping out too soon to open up space for Ismaila Sarr’s equalizer after the break.

Carragher of course knows one or two things about defending, and the Liverpool legend was left more than a little concerned by what he saw from his former side at Wembley.

“LFC looking great going forward but susceptible defensively, as we’ve seen all preseason,” Carragher posted on X

When a fan replied to him suggesting Liverpool could be involved in a lot of high-scoring games in the new season, Carragher responded: “That makes me nervous!!”

It’s a problem that Slot also recognized as he delivered a blunt message to his players after the game, insisting that they need to improve defensively.

“If you look at our attacking play against a team that is so compact, that might be a bit better than last season, and I think we created more chances last season, we only could score one goal against Palace, now we score two.

“But, on the other hand, we again conceded two goals, which we did against Bilbao, and we conceded a couple more against Milan, so that is something we need to do better.”

Liverpool will have to improve quickly before the start of the new Premier League season, which is now just a few days away.

The Reds host Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday as they aim to make the perfect start to their title defense, and they will need to take on board both their head coach and Carragher's advice.
