Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says he is "sick" of Reds supporters being told how they should feel about Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving the club.

But Carragher admits the departing right-back has sacrificed some of the love from fans with his decision.

Alexander-Arnold confirmed on Monday he will exit Anfield at the end of the season, with the England international expected to join Real Madrid in the summer.

The news has prompted as mixed reaction among Liverpool supporters, with Alexander-Arnold having already attracted a smattering of jeers from the away end at Leicester City last month when speculation was intensifying over an imminent move to the European Super League advocates.

And Carragher, now a television pundit, believes there should be no questioning the range of emotions being shown by the Reds faithful.

"You have the reaction of Liverpool supporters, which has been different," he said.

I'm probably one of the ones who is somewhere in the middle.

"But I'm sick of reading about journalists or other people who have got no affiliation to Liverpool telling Liverpool supporters how they should feel.

That's why you see the scenes that you saw last week when Liverpool won the league, you don't really see those scenes for a team winning the league because we are emotional, football means a lot to us.

"I don't think people out there should be telling Liverpool supporters how they should feel.

Trent is going to Real Madrid, he can do what he wants - it's his career, fine, good luck to him - and Liverpool supporters can feel how they want about this situation."

Carragher acknowledges that regardless of the individual reaction from supporters, Alexander-Arnold will no longer be held in quite the same regard.

"He will lose something that he's got right now in terms of Liverpool supporters' love for him, him being 'one of their own' will diminish," said the ex-Liverpool man.

Some other people will say 'You've got to play for Real Madrid, it's the biggest club in the world'.

"You can put how the supporters feel to one side, it's your career and you get one chance at it.
