Jamie Carragher has shared a concerned response to the news that Liverpool will lose Julian Ward at the end of the season.

“So it does feel like a little bit of a shock, and I think it is a little bit of a worry for Liverpool right now.” The former defender added: “There seems to be a lot of upheaval behind the scenes in terms of the ownership, Michael Edwards has moved on, Julian Ward came in to replace him, and now he’s gone as well.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher, who made over 700 appearances for Liverpool said: “It’s not ideal because I think when you’re talking about recruiting players, a person in that role is heavily involved not just for right now, maybe the January transfer window, you’re talking about the summer as well.

Ward is currently the club’s sporting director but he is now set to depart Anfield in the summer, despite only taking the job earlier in the year.

Liverpool have been hugely successful under their current owners, but the era now appears to be approaching its conclusion.

He has been at the club for over a decade and is believed to be keen on taking a break away from football, similar reasoning to his highly successful predecessor Michael Edwards leaving.

Their director of research, Ian Graham, has also issued a blow to the club after resigning from his position, with his departure said to come in May.
