Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has issued a stark warning to Liverpool regarding their pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak in the Premier League transfer market. Carragher cautions that Liverpool risk jeopardizing their bid to reclaim the league title if they hinge their hopes on signing Isak and fail to do so.
According to Carragher, Liverpool's offensive options are currently insufficient, with only three main attacking players—Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, and Hugo Ekitike—deemed "top-class operators." The recent £110 million offer for Isak was rejected by Newcastle, who appear determined to retain their striker, and Carragher believes inflating the fee to £130 million would be an excessive gamble.
He also criticized Isak’s reportedly "unacceptable refusal" to play for Newcastle following the transfer saga, suggesting that Isak’s performances may have been overvalued. Carragher emphasized the urgent need for Liverpool to devise a contingency plan, as relying solely on Isak’s arrival could leave them exposed, particularly with Salah expected to miss part of the season due to the Africa Cup of Nations.
Reflecting on the season opener where Liverpool scored four against Bournemouth, Carragher highlighted that manager Arne Slot's side currently lacks depth in attack to sustain such performances throughout the campaign. He implied that acquiring at least one or two additional high-caliber attackers would be crucial for Liverpool to mount a serious title challenge.
In his Telegraph column, Carragher summarized the situation stating, "Slot will not defend the crown with only three out-and-out attackers... They cannot carry the goalscoring burden without at least one more, preferably two, top-class operators across the front line."
This sharp assessment serves both as a caution to Liverpool’s management and a commentary on Newcastle’s firm stance amid the transfer interest in Alexander Isak.
