Jamie Carragher kicked Manchester United when they were down before fellow Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah rubbed salt into their wounds.

United’s miserable campaign was completed last night when they lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Already consigned to the club’s lowest domestic finish since their relegation from the then First Division in 1974, the Red Devils had a chance to salvage something from their shocking season at the San Mames Stadium.

But instead Untied, who last month saw bitter rivals Liverpool equal their record of 20 top-flight English league titles, served up another sorry showing in Bilbao.

Brennan Johnson’s scrappy 42nd-minute goal settled the final, ended Tottenham’s 17-year wait for a trophy and booked their place in the 2025-26 Champions League.

Ruben Amorim’s side, however, are facing a season without European football after the miserable 1-0 defeat.

And Carragher, who won the Europa League with Liverpool in 2001, was quick to stick the boot in, posting on X: “Lads, it’s Man United!”

That was a twist on the infamous ‘Lads, it’s Spurs’ phrase uttered by legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson before his side played Tottenham.

It is a saying, along with ‘Spursy’, that has dogged the North London outfit over the years.

But after Ange Postecoglou delivered on his promise that he ‘always’ wins silverware in his second season at a club, Tottenham can consign those phrases to the bin.

Even Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah was impressed by Spurs’ bold boss, unexpectedly taking to X seven minutes after Carragher to post: “He did say he’d win in his second season.

Congratulations!”

Salah and Liverpool will lift the Premier League trophy on Sunday after their final game of the campaign at home to FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.

Man United, meanwhile, host Champions League-chasing Aston Villa, knowing defeat could see them finish fourth from bottom.
