Liverpool have made a perfect start to the season but things could derail very quickly.

Reds fans will be delighted with the summer they have just had, with many now more confident than ever that they will be able to retain their Premier League title.

Competition for the trophy has only increased further, though, meaning Liverpool’s job is going to be even trickier than before.

Despite many fans being confident, the same cannot be said for ex-Red Jamie Carragher, with the former defender believing that there is one big mistake they have made.

In fact, he thinks it might be so severe that it might even cost Liverpool their second Premier League title in as many seasons.

It has been clear for all to see that the Reds have some sort of problem at the back this season as they have shipped far too many goals in the early exchanges.

To make matters worse, they tried to do something about it but could not get it over the line, with a deal for Marc Guehi collapsing at the 11th hour.

Of course, Liverpool fans are gutted about not signing the Englishman, but many may think they can still cope, although Carragher is a little more pessimistic.

“It’s three games in, they’ve got nine points from nine and haven’t played that well, but that is the one area [not signing Marc Guehi] that could blow back in their face,” he told The Overlap.

“What Guehi was giving Liverpool was competition at centre-back, which is something they don’t currently have, they have two starters and two understudies.

“This is Joe Gomez, who is injury prone himself, and the young lad who’s only 18, come from Italy, going to be a good prospect, but what would happen if one of them had to play for a couple of months?”

As well as this, Liverpool’s first choice options are a 34-year-old in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, who looks set to leave on a free transfer next summer, showing how the future of the Reds backline is far from certain.

Liverpool last won the Premier League back in the 2019/20 season, and the less that is said about their title defence, the better.

They scraped into the top four by the skin of their teeth, and a big reason for this was due to their lack of depth at centre-back.

Due to both van Dijk and Joel Matip being injured for large parts of the season, Liverpool were forced to look to their youth and start the likes of Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams on far too many occasions.

Ozan Kabak also got a run out when more injuries followed, while even Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were forced to play there.

This all came down to the Reds not having enough options to choose from, something they could suffer from again this season due to their failure to sign Guehi.
