Former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Wise has told Jamie Carragher his “excuse is gone” while putting the pressure on Liverpool and Arne Slot to deliver another Premier League title.

The Reds are defending their crown this season after claiming a 20th title in Slot’s first campaign since taking over from Jurgen Klopp.

Eight new signings were made, including the record transfers of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, with around $568 million spent in total on the new additions.

The Reds were by far the biggest spenders during the window, which will bring its own pressure as the season goes on, with Wise among those believing they should be the team to beat now.

"Liverpool have started well – nine points from three games," Wise told Sky Bet.

Liverpool has won all three of its Premier League games so far this season

"You never know in football – some injuries or suspensions and things can change.

"Jamie Carragher can’t keep saying everyone’s spent money except Liverpool, because Liverpool have splashed the cash now as well, so that excuse is gone!"

Liverpool.com says: To be fair to Carragher, we don’t think he has used that excuse that often, and it’s not like it ceases to be a valid point just because Liverpool has splashed the cash over the summer.

Of course, having spent so much on new signings - and big-name signings at that - the Reds will face a new kind of pressure this season, with rivals no doubt eager to pounce on any slip-ups.

It will take time for all the new additions to gel, but the early signs are at least promising, and we should hopefully see the benefit of the increased squad as the schedule becomes more hectic after the international break.
