There is little question that Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League this season.

Well clear at the top of the table having scored the most and conceded the second least amount of goals, the Reds have been terrific.

On top of that, Liverpool have quite clearly had the outstanding player of the 2024/25 campaign as well.

Mohamed Salah is sitting pretty as both top scorer and top assister in the Premier League.

And it isn’t even close.

Salah is currently three ahead of the inevitable Erling Haaland in the goals scored column and four clear of both Bukayo Saka and Antonee Robinson in terms of assists.

Rewind to December, though, and former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher was insistent that it was Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, not Salah, who was the division’s most effective player.

But when Carragher raved about him on Sky Sports back on December the 8th, Salah was already clear of him in every aspect.

Nevertheless, the Liverpool legend stuck his neck on the line and went big on Chelsea’s No.20.

“I loved him last season and he’s started this season really well,” said Carragher.

“If you look at his 18 months at Chelsea, I don’t think there’s been a player in the Premier League who’s performed better than him.”

Given Salah’s form at the time, Liverpool fans understandably reacted with surprise at Carragher’s comments.

But the months since have only made things look worse for the pundit.

While Salah has gone from strength to strength and now has 22 Premier League goals and 14 assists to his name, Palmer is without either in five games across all competitions.

In reality, this should never have been a debate at all.

Carragher will caveat his claim by saying Palmer was better than Salah in the Premier League last season, which was encapsulated in his ’18 months’ period.

But although his numbers were slightly higher than Mo’s in 2023/24, the sheer brilliance of Salah across the early part of the current campaign made it a bizarre suggestion from Carragher.

And since his backing of Palmer, the two players have gone in opposite directions.

The Chelsea man has three goals and no assists in the 10 games played since December the 8th.
