Japan has been thrust into emergency mode following a devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake that struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The tremor, one of the strongest recorded in modern history, has generated tsunami waves that warrant nation-wide caution
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a tsunami with a height of 40 centimeters (1.3 feet) was recorded in Tokachi, located on the southern coastline of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island.
Meanwhile, in the Russian regions closest to the earthquake’s epicenter on the Kamchatka Peninsula, authorities reported both damage and the evacuation of residents, but thankfully no serious injuries were confirmed.
But for Reds fans, it does not seem like the emergency will affect the friendly today.

Marinos at the Nissan Stadium.
Crucially, Yokohama lies on Japan’s western coast, positioned just south of Tokyo and significantly removed from the tsunami-affected eastern regions.

Local transport networks serving the Nissan Stadium remain operational, with no immediate disruption to the match logistics reported.
Liverpool’s training base in Tokyo’s Minato City has also remained unaffected by the emergency, allowing Arne Slot’s squad to maintain their preparation schedule.
James Pearce of the Athletic has suggested the game will still go ahead, taking to X to report:
“Liverpool’s game against Yokohama F Marinos not in doubt as things stand – despite tsunami warning in Japan.”
“Public transport to the Nissan Stadium still operating.
