Jarell Quansah faced uphill Liverpool battle after ruthless Arne Slot decision

Jarell Quansah may feel he has a point to prove to Arne Slot following his exit from Liverpool, with the defender having not got off to the best of starts under his former boss.

Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen was confirmed on Wednesday, with a deal having been agreed that will see Liverpool receive an initial $41 million, which could rise to $48 million through add-ons.

The 22-year-old’s departure comes despite him signing a long-term contract at Anfield back in October 2024.

Quansah will be aiming to gain more playing time at Leverkusen next season, having struggled for opportunities with Slot following his breakthrough season under Jurgen Klopp.

The England U21 international actually began last season as Slot’s starting center-back alongside Virgil van Dijk, although he would last just 45 minutes of Liverpool’s opening game of the season at Ipswich before being replaced by Ibrahima Konate.

It was a decision that raised eyebrows, especially after Quansah was seen looking more than a little disgruntled with his new boss on the bench, but it paid off as Liverpool went on to win 2-0.

“First thing I said was we don’t have to speak about tactics if we lose so many duels and that’s what we did,” Slot said as he explained the substitution after the game.

“That’s not that Jarell lost every duel – many of us lost too many duels – but I think we needed Ibou Konate to win these long balls in the air from the No.9.

“So that helps, that gave us control but they put so, so, so much energy in the first half.”

Slot added: “We lost almost every long ball, every duel to both sides and in the second half we was ready.

I think our problem in the first half was more that we lost too many duels – our defenders lost too many and our attackers didn’t win enough.”

Despite the Liverpool boss trying to take some of the heat off Quansah, it soon became clear the academy graduate was going to have a hard time working his way back into the reckoning.

He wouldn’t get any minutes in the next 11 Premier League games, and he would only start another three league games for the remainder of the season - two of which came when the title was already wrapped up.

It perhaps shouldn’t come as a surprise then that Quansah has moved on this summer

Liverpool does have a buyback option included in the deal with Leverkusen, so should he be able to prove a point to Slot, Quansah could well still find a way back to Anfield.
