Jarell Quansah's Bayer Leverkusen contract is set to include a relatively small buy-back clause, offering Liverpool some insurance if the 22-year-old goes on to establish himself as a top-class defender with the Bundesliga club.
Quansah endured a regressive 2024-25 campaign, starting just four times in the Premier League — two of which came after the title was wrapped up.
The young center-back had started in 10 of Liverpool's final 15 league games during the previous season under Jurgen Klopp, but Arne Slot quickly decided that Ibrahima Konate would be Virgil van Dijk's partner this term.
Liverpool has had plenty of dealings with Leverkusen in recent weeks, signing Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz, and now another significant transfer is set to take place between the two clubs.

The Reds will receive a guaranteed €30 million ($35 million) fee for Quansah, with a possible further €5 million ($6 million) to come in add-ons.
Curiously, Sky Germany reports that Liverpool's buy-back option stands at just €40 million ($46 million), which means the Reds would only have to pay a small amount more than they are selling Quansah for in order to re-sign him.
That effectively mitigates the risk of allowing him to leave, and means there is every chance that Quansah could return to Liverpool when he is further down the road with his development.
For the moment, though, Liverpool is planning for life without Quansah, and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi could be the man who replaces him in Slot's squad.
Liverpool is facing a period of uncertainty in the center-back position, with no long-term guarantees over the futures of any of the four center-backs who were in the squad this season.
Quansah is leaving, while Joe Gomez missed the final four months of the campaign due to a hamstring injury which required surgery, and Ibrahima Konate will soon enter the final 12 months of his contract on Merseyside.
Virgil van Dijk signed a two-year contract extension in April but he turns 34 next month, and while he has shown no signs of slowing down any time soon, Slot will be keen to add a player like Guehi, 24, to bring some long-term stability to that area of the field.
Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham are all interested in Guehi, but The Guardian reports that the 24-year-old is also open to the idea of running down his contract at Palace and leaving on a free transfer next year.
If he does leave Palace this summer, Guehi has reportedly told friends that he would prefer to join Liverpool over Spurs and Newcastle.
