Jayden Danns was seen as a hot prospect when he joined Sunderland on loan from Liverpool in January.
The 19-year-old forward was expected to bring his impressive goal-scoring form from Liverpool’s academy to help Sunderland in their push for promotion to the Premier League.
With his reputation growing after a standout FA Cup performance, fans had high hopes for the young striker.
Sunderland’s excitement was palpable when they secured the loan deal, believing Danns would be a key addition to their squad.
However, things have not gone as expected.
The forward has struggled to make an impact at Sunderland, and it appears his time at the club has been far from successful.
The situation has become a source of frustration for both the player and the club.
Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, speaking to Football League World, described the whole ordeal as a “disappointment” for both parties.
He said, “I think he would’ve been a real good addition to that side, they’ve got some very good young players and he would’ve fitted in nicely.”
However, Hendrie went on to explain that Danns’ loan move was always a gamble.
He added, “Anyone going there unfit, struggling with little niggles, is always a gamble and it hasn’t paid off unfortunately.”
Danns arrived at Sunderland with an underlying back injury, which was flagged up during his medical.
Despite this, Sunderland went ahead with the deal, hoping that he could recover and contribute to the team’s promotion bid.
Unfortunately, Danns has yet to play for Sunderland, with his rehabilitation taking place back at Liverpool.
Lee Hendrie acknowledged the missed opportunity, stating, “I’m sure Danns will be disappointed that he hasn’t been able to get himself on the pitch where he can prove what he’s all about.”
As Sunderland’s promotion hopes begin to slip, the absence of Danns is becoming a glaring issue.
The club may now look back at the decision to push through with the deal despite the injury, realizing that the gamble didn’t pay off.
For Danns, this has been a frustrating period where injuries have overshadowed his potential.
The disappointment is mutual for both the player and Sunderland.
