Liverpool’s summer exploded into life on Friday as the Reds announced their first addition of the transfer window.

It is expected to be a busy time at Anfield, as Arne Slot aims to build a team that can launch a Premier League title defence.

Jeremie Frimpong became the first piece of the puzzle to be added, joining in a £30m deal from Bayer Leverkusen.

Frimpong appears excited to join Liverpool, with supporters already warming to his bubbly personality.

But although the right-back’s arrival has been celebrated, fans are perhaps more preoccupied with the potential arrival of his former Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz.

Frimpong and Wirtz are good friends having spent the past four-and-a-half years together at the Bundesliga club.

And as they prepare for a possible link up at Anfield, Frimpong has already explained how the pair work together on the pitch.

There is of course no complete guarantee that Wirtz will join Liverpool.

The Reds are going to have to fork out a record fee to ensure it happens.

But Wirtz is standing by for a medical before completing the deal, and it now feels like only a matter of time before he is reunited with Frimpong on Merseyside.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

As well as the bonus of providing each other with an instant buddy in a new environment, the relationship between Frimpong and Wirtz should be beneficial from a footballing perspective, too.

Speaking to Bayer Leverkusen’s official X account in September 2021, the former Celtic player admitted he is always looking for Wirtz out on the pitch.

“You know Flo, Flo’s my guy,” Frimpong smiled.

“I know where to find him and I can trust him, you know.

“So, if I have the chance to pass the ball to him I always pass the ball to him and he knows how to finish it.”

Liverpool fans will be desperately hoping to see Frimpong and Wirtz link up in red next season.

With Frimpong having also already played alongside Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo for the Netherlands national team, he should have no trouble settling into a rhythm with Liverpool.

As for Wirtz, he has obviously never played with anyone in the Reds squad aside from Frimpong, but that should not be an issue at all.

When you’re paying as much as Liverpool are ready to for Wirtz, you expect the player to be able to slot easily into any team.

It has been a painful wait for supporters who are hanging on for every update to hear that the record deal has been agreed with Leverkusen.

For the moment, that has not been forthcoming.

But with June 1st arriving on Sunday, and the transfer opening along with it, it surely won’t be long before Wirtz jets in to see his old friend again.
