It may have taken the best part of 15 years and seen visits to two other countries.

But finally Jeremie Frimpong is where he was always destined to be.

Frimpong became the first Liverpool signing of the summer on Friday afternoon when agreeing a five-year deal after his £29.5million release clause from Bayer Leverkusen was triggered.

The Holland international had wanted to move to the Reds's Academy in Kirkby when he was a youngster only for the very real world issue of his family being unable to drive meaning a 15-minute bus ride to Manchester City was a more viable option.

After the best part of a decade with City's youth set-up, Frimpong joined Scottish champions Celtic for two years and then spent another four in Germany before his circuitous route to Liverpool was this week completed.

"You always want to play for the top teams as a footballer, as a kid," says Frimpong.

However, earlier in his career he forged his reputation as a full-back, and Liverpool regard him not as a direct replacement for the departed Trent Alexander-Arnold but as a versatile option along the right wing, not least with Mohamed Salah expected to miss up to six weeks of the busy winter period next season due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The new arrival also bolsters strong Dutch representation at Anfield, with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch already part of a squad led by head coach Arne Slot and his staff.

"I have had a few conversations with them," says Frimpong of his Holland national team colleagues.

Not just him, the whole Liverpool squad.

I want to win as many trophies as possible."

And Frimpong already has a head start regards learning the local lingo after a clip quickly spread on social media in March of him greeting new Liverpool team-mate Gakpo during international duty.

"I didn’t know it was going to go that viral!" he says.

"For me, it was literally just, obviously Ryan plays for Liverpool and obviously Liverpool is Scouse, so I just did that.
