Jermain Defoe believes Diogo Jota is the best finisher at Liverpool despite Mohamed Salah’s impressive goalscoring prowess.
Jota is currently in the process of recovering from a hip injury he suffered during the match against Fulham on April 21.
As of now, he has not resumed first-team training as he missed Sunday’s 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield in the Premier League.
Liverpool remain optimistic about his recovery and aim to reintegrate the Portugal international into the matchday squad before the end of the season.
Jota, who has been hampered by injuries this season has scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 32 appearances for the Reds this season.
“I think Jota is probably the best finisher,” Defoe told Premier League Productions.
“He actually finishes, like calculated finishes.
It’s the wrong thing to do in that situation.
“The chances, when it comes consistently, like week after week and game after game and you are missing all these chances, then you are competing against teams like Man City and Arsenal that get these chances and players are converting these chances.
“Then you are going to fall behind.”
Jota brought additional Premier League-proven quality to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad following his transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 2020.
The 27-year-old had already showcased his talent by scoring 16 goals in 67 top-flight appearances over the previous two seasons while at Wolves.
During this time, Wolves achieved consecutive seventh-placed finishes in the league.
Additionally, Jota contributed nine goals in the Europa League during the 2019-2020 season, aiding his team’s journey to the quarter-finals.
