Former Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek has weighed in on Liverpool’s season as the club prepares to bid farewell to manager Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds secured the Carabao Cup earlier this season with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea back in February.
However, recent setbacks have hindered the club’s pursuit of additional silverware.
Liverpool were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League at the quarterfinal stage by Atalanta and suffered an exit from the FA Cup following a defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United.
Klopp’s team has slipped to third place in the Premier League and currently trails league leaders Arsenal by five points, with only three matches remaining in the season.
Reflecting on Liverpool’s campaign, Dudek told winwin: “In general, I think it was very important to end the season with a championship, which was achieved in the League Cup by beating Chelsea.
“We must not forget how this season started.
“I think at the beginning of the season, Liverpool fans were worried about the team’s performance this season.
He added: “During the season, Klopp signed a number of players.
“We were not sure whether these players would fit into Liverpool’s roster and the assumption that they would have the quality to help the team compete for the English Premier League title and the rest of the tournaments.
“During the season, after 7 or 8 months, they have proven to be very good players.
“Without them, we might have fought for seventh or eighth place and we would not have been in the hunt for the Premier League title until the end.
“Any team in the English Premier League goes through some crises during the season.
“We saw that in Liverpool, and Liverpool was unlucky to see those difficulties at the end of the season, and this is very sad, but in general, they won.
“Liverpool has won a championship this season, and this is better than nothing.”
Jurgen Klopp will step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the current season.
Since taking charge at Anfield in October 2015, the German has guided the team to several triumphs, securing seven different trophies including the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FIFA Club World Cup.
“Jurgen Klopp will say goodbye to the fans after a wonderful journey, 9 wonderful years, and in the end, we must not forget what he did for that club,” Dudek said.
“Competition is always difficult, but it is very disappointing to see the players performing like this over the past weeks, a performance that we may not have seen from others.
“He accepted, but in the end, the team won a championship that season.”
