Jerzy Dudek names the best manager that he has worked with, and it’s not Rafa Benitez

Liverpool have had some elite managers in their time so choosing the best is certainly a hard decision.

The Reds romped to the Premier League in what was only Arne Slot’s first season in charge, with the Dutchman now setting the bar even higher.

Based on the players he has brought into the club this summer, trophies have gone from a target to an expectation, with Liverpool aiming to, and perhaps expected to, win the lot.

This has not always been the case, however, and previous managers have over-achieved, winning trophies that not many expected them to.

And, despite winning the Champions League in 2005 following that night in Istanbul and defying all odds, goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek does not believe that Rafa Benitez is the best manager he has worked with, instead choosing another Liverpool hero.

During Dudek’s era, Liverpool were far less competitive than they are now, with the club trying to pick themselves up after a difficult 1990s.

However, it was towards the end of that decade where things started to look up for the Reds, with the Polish goalkeeper then joining not too long after in 2001.

Dudek clearly thinks that this was one of the best times for him at the club, with the shot-stopper naming the manager at the time, Gerard Houllier, as the best he had worked with during a TikTok video.

“Gerard Houllier because he brought me to Liverpool,” Dudek replied when asked the question who is the best coach he has worked under by the Redmen TV.

During Houllier’s time at Anfield, which stretched between 1998 and 2004, the Frenchman won the treble in 2001, leading the team to the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup.

Jamie Carragher once said that Houllier has a ‘transformative impact’ on Liverpool and he changed the culture at the club to restore success, showing just how respected he was.

Houllier sadly passed away in 2022, but his legacy at the club will live on forever.

When asked what his favourite moment in a Liverpool shirt was, there was only going to be one answer, wasn’t there?

3-0 down at half time, the game looking done and dusted, and the Reds’ hopes of a fifth European Cup all-but gone.

Somehow, they recovered it back to 3-3, with help from Dudek following an astonishing double save against Andriy Shevchenko, and they took it to penalties.

And, if he hadn’t done enough to prove his worth, the Polish keeper made himself a hero by saving the Ukrainian’s penalty to win them the trophy, arguably the most iconic moment in the club’s history.
