Sunderland players past and present were quick to react after the club confirmed a fresh contract for one of their key men.

The Black Cats gear up for their long-awaited return to the Premier League and their summer window has been nothing short of hectic.

Regis Le Bris has overseen a major squad overhaul, bringing in 11 new signings with the likes of Granit Xhaka and Omar Alderete joining, with Sunderland also smashing the club’s transfer record to land Habib Diarra.

Alongside the arrivals, there have been notable departures, with Jobe Bellingham making a high-profile move to Borussia Dortmund.

Now, however, Sunderland have announced that a player previously linked with a move away has committed his future to the club, a decision warmly received by both current and former teammates online.

Full-back Trai Hume has committed his future to Sunderland, signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2030.

The announcement came via the club’s official Instagram page, accompanied by the caption: “Trai Hume is here to stay.

The news prompted a wave of reactions from across the football world, with former teammate Bellingham, Liverpool’s Conor Bradley and Wilson Isidor among those to like the post.

Since joining from Northern Irish side Linfield in 2022, the 23-year-old has become a key figure at the Stadium of Light, making 132 appearances.

Last season, he played a vital role in Sunderland’s promotion campaign under Le Bris, registering three goals and six assists in 48 appearances.

Wolves and Everton had both shown interest in Hume earlier in the summer, but the new deal puts an end to any speculation about his future.

Despite a busy summer that has seen 11 new arrivals and key contract extensions, Sunderland have been dealt a blow in their striker search.
