Liverpool have a huge season ahead and will have plenty of games to play if they are to achieve their goals.

The Reds’ campaign has begun and this year expectations are higher than ever, with there being added pressure to retain their Premier League title.

Arne Slot will be looking to go back-to-back while also aiming to win his first Champions League title, as well as giving both the League Cup and FA Cup a good go.

To do this, he will need to be able to rely upon all of his players, with every single one likely required at some point of the season.

Of course, he has superstars at his disposal who make things a lot easier, but Joe Cole believes one in particular should play a lot less throughout the campaign.

If there is one player who would be the most essential player to Liverpool’s team, the majority would say Mohamed Salah, with his goals simply irreplaceable.

However, given his age, Cole believes that he needs to play a lot less this season so that he can continue performing, with this the reason why the former Liverpool man believes Salah will not win Player of the Season.

“I disagree not because I don’t think he is a wonderful player, I just think to get the best out of him over the longest period of time, he needs to start managing his minutes,” Cole said on the TNT Sports TikTok account.

“This is so that he is Mo Salah in big games for three, four, five years even and we see more of him because he’s so good.”

Salah played in all 38 Premier League matches last season, as well as nine Champions League games, suggesting he is far from finished just yet.

Of course, Salah will hate being substituted or even starting on the bench, although both could be a possibility at times this season.

As Cole said, longevity is key and his minutes might need managing ever so slightly, but this is something they can do without losing too much threat.

Jeremie Frimpong is often regarded as Salah’s alternative, with the attacking full-back likely to play there while he is at AFCON over the winter.

As things stand, Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott can also be options, suggesting that resting Salah on occasions is not the worst thing in the world.

However, do so at your peril, Slot, as it certainly will not go down well with the winger himself, and Liverpool need to do all they can not to upset him towards the twilight of his Anfield career.
