Liverpool were dealt a boost ahead of their Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth as Joe Gomez has returned to first-team training after injury.

However, Jeremie Frimpong is likely to make his Premier League debut in the absence of Conor Bradley, who faces a race against time to return.

The Premier League champions have their curtain-raiser at Anfield on Friday before huge back-to-back encounters against Newcastle United and Arsenal to end August.



It has been a summer of change for the Reds after a host of arrivals, as well as their title winners departing the club, with Darwin Nunez's the latest exit after joining Al-Hilal.

There is excitement at Anfield, with pundits tipping Arne Slot's side to successfully defend their place at the summit of English football, with the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike in line to make their domestic Liverpool bows.

The ECHO has taken a look at the latest Liverpool injury and suspension news.

Gravenberch missed last weekend's Community Shield after becoming a father for the first time.

However, he will miss the Premier League opener after picking up two yellow cards in the final game of last season against Crystal Palace.

The Argentine made a cameo appearance last weekend and missed his spot-kick in the penalty shootout.

But throughout pre-season, he has had his minutes managed due to an injury that he picked up at the end of last season that saw him miss the international break.

The issue restricted him to limited minutes during their preparations.

Any concern surrounding the midfielder will be whether he will continue to have his minutes monitored or whether Slot will entrust him to play the full 90.

When discussing Liverpool's defensive record, Slot highlighted Mac Allister's lack of involvement in pre-season.

"Don't forget we missed Mac Allister in parts of last season and barely played pre-season, only recently," he said.

There was no update on Conor Bradley's fitness from Slot in his pre-match press conference but the Northern Ireland international faces a race to be fit for Friday after missing the final friendly against Athletic Bilbao and the Community Shield disappointment.

The minor injury curtailed his involvement and it remains to be seen whether he will be in contention after failing to feature in any of the released training pictures by the Reds.

Slot did admit that he has a decision to make with his matchday squad after Gomez returned to training this week.

An Achilles injury saw him leave the pre-season tour of the Far East early.

The Dutchman revealed that Gomez has managed to participate in two training sessions but it may come too soon for his return to competitive action.

He said: "I have to make a decision, he's trained twice, he missed a lot of pre-season.

"If you looked at our bench against Palace, there was three players 20 years or younger.

"There is a possibility that Joe will be on the bench but I have to look at the answers and who we’re going to take.”
