Liverpool’s Premier League title bid has suffered an untimely blow after defender Joe Gomez was ruled out for up to six weeks with a leg fracture.

Gomez is not expected to return until next year after injuring his lower left leg in Liverpool’s 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday.

The England defender was stretchered off early in the first half, following a Ben Mee challenge which infuriated manager Jurgen Klopp, and there is actually relief inside Liverpool that the injury is not more severe.

Gomez was clattered into the advertising hoardings at Turf Moor after Mee’s tackle and Klopp criticised referee Stuart Attwell for being too lenient with Burnley’s players.

The 21-year-old will now miss the crucial Champions League tie with Napoli next week and Premier League games over the festive period against Manchester United, Wolves, Newcastle and Arsenal.

Liverpool issued a statement which read: “Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez sustained a fracture to the lower left leg during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday night.
