Liverpool sold a massive chunk of their squad over the course of the summer transfer window.

The 2025-26 summer transfer window was one full of rather expensive changes, with over £400million being spent on their new recruits.

Marc Guehi was Arne Slot’s only transfer target that he missed out on this summer, with Crystal Palace pulling the plug on the deal at the final hour.

“Liverpool were wanting to sign Marc Guehi, but they were willing to let Joe Gomez go,” he said.

“They want four centre-halves, that’s how they’re going to approach this, they’ve got two either side in terms of their full-backs as well, so they’re absolutely covered there.

“The one question mark you could have is Joe Gomez’s fitness, maybe Konate gets an injury, but those concerns have existed for a while.”

Seeing as though Liverpool only play with two centre-backs in their starting XI, there’s no need for them to have five centre-backs among their ranks.

However, if the Reds signed Guehi and kept Gomez this summer, there would’ve been little to no chance of the Italian breaking into Slot’s starting XI.

Granted, Guehi is rather versatile and can be used anywhere across the back four, but since Liverpool also have two full-backs on either side, there’s not much chance of Gomez getting used there either.
