John Achterberg, the longstanding goalkeeping coach at Liverpool, will leave the club at the end of the 2023-24 season, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career.

His departure is part of a broader exodus of staff from Jurgen Klopp’s team, which includes assistant manager Pep Lijnders, Peter Krawietz, elite development coach Victor Matos, and head of recovery and performance Andreas Schlumberger.

There will no doubt be even more exits announced in the coming weeks and months as the post-Jurgen Klopp era starts to take place.

Having joined Liverpool’s coaching crew in 2009, initially working with the youth squads, Achterberg ascended to the main team as a goalkeeping coach in 2011.

Over his 15-year tenure, he has served under managers Roy Hodgson, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers, and Jürgen Klopp, contributing to a period of considerable success for the club.

During his time at Liverpool, Achterberg has been part of a team that clinched the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Community Shield, as well as three League Cup titles.

His long career at Liverpool not only highlights his skills and dedication but also underscores the respect and affection he has garnered within the club.

As Achterberg prepares to seek new opportunities, his exit underscores the transition underway at Liverpool, with incoming manager Arne Slot set to begin a new era.

John Achterberg to meet up with Steven Gerrard2

According to the Mirror, the Dutchman is set to join forces with Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq at the end of the season.

Gerrard saw Achterberg’s work firsthand and has now offered the goalkeeping coach a new adventure in Saudi Arabia.

Gerrard has now taken a few former Liverpool representatives including Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum, as well as Liverpool academy analyst Ray Shearwood.

Achterberg penned an emotional farewell letter following his announcement, thanking Jurgen Klopp for the impact he’s had on Merseyside:

“I have loved each day working at this amazing club, but after a long think I feel it could be right for me to start a new challenge.”
