John Achterberg, Liverpool’s goalkeeping coach, has declared that he will depart from the club after the 2023-24 season.

He will join a growing list of Jurgen Klopp’s staff that are bidding farewell to Anfield in the summer including assistant manager Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, elite development coach Victor Matos, and head of recovery and performance Andreas Schlumberger.

Concluding a 15-year tenure with the Reds at the end of the campaign, the John Achterberg plans to pursue a new opportunity next summer.

Achterberg, who spent over a decade as a player with Tranmere Rovers, joined Liverpool’s coaching staff in 2009, initially focusing on the club’s youth players.

He transitioned to a senior role the following year and was named the goalkeeping coach in 2011.

Throughout his service at Liverpool, Achterberg has worked under four managers—Roy Hodgson, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers, and Jürgen Klopp—and has been integral to the team’s success.

During his time, Liverpool secured numerous titles, including the Premier League, Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, Emirates FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FA Community Shield, in addition to winning the League Cup three times.

A well-liked and respected individual within Liverpool, his exit does really signify that one era at Liverpool is ending – with Arne Slot primed to usher in his own reign.
