John Barnes suggests that under Arne Slot’s potential leadership at Liverpool, two players could rediscover their top form.
With Slot known for his high-energy, high-octane football akin to Jurgen Klopp’s style, there’s anticipation for a fresh outlook on the squad, rich with talent.
John Barnes particularly singles out Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo as players who could thrive under Slot’s approach, especially given their limited starting opportunities this season.
Gakpo has had a respectable goal-scoring campaign, tallying 15 goals across all competitions.
However, a significant portion of his goals have been scored in the EFL Cup and Europa League.
Despite showing promise, the 25-year-old has often played second fiddle to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
On the other hand, Gravenberch has encountered challenges in his first year of transition.
Additionally, the former Liverpool striker expresses confidence in Virgil van Dijk’s continued prominence within the team, suggesting that Slot’s arrival could further solidify his pivotal role.
Barnes told soccernews: “Virgil has always been fantastic for Liverpool.
“Even after his injuries people spoke about the way he was playing but he was impacted by the way Liverpool played.
“The midfield did not protect the back four and we had two attacking full backs which left our centre backs exposed.
“He’s been fantastic.
They will all benefit from Slot coming in.”
Slot is poised to succeed Klopp at Anfield, with the club having reached an agreement with Feyenoord regarding compensation.
The 45-year-old has been at the helm of Feyenoord since 2021, and last season he steered the club to its first Eredivisie title since 2017, finishing seven points ahead of PSV Eindhoven.
