Stones had been linked with a Man City exit throughout the summer following another injury-disrupted season, in which he made just 20 appearances across all competitions.

Despite this, Guardiola has continued to trust him, with Stones starting all three of City’s opening matches this season alongside Ruben Dias, but now, that may change due to his latest setback.

Although Stones ultimately stayed at the Etihad this summer, Man City allowed Manuel Akanji to join Inter Milan, leaving options at the back limited if the Englishman is injured for a long period once again.

The 30-year-old has just one year left on his City contract, and there has been no talks regarding a new deal.

Man City fans previously called for Stones to retire due to his constant injury worries, and now, the supporters have once again called for his exit following the latest update.

One supporter reacted to the news with: “Time to move on from him.

Great player but is way too injury prone”, with another adding: “He should’ve been sold in the summer.
