This was four years on from his departure as director of football at Liverpool, with owners Fenway Sports Group seeing the deal to bring a then 20-year-old Jordan Henderson in from Sunderland for a fee of around £20m as the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of Comolli's job with the Reds.

A decade on from joining and only Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypiä have played more Premier League games than Henderson's 290.

“The day I got sacked they told me I had made a big mistake on Jordan and he was a waste of money", Damien Comolli said back in 2016.

Thankfully, in typical Henderson fashion, he rejected the move, determined to prove his worth and make his Liverpool career a success.

Henderson endured a difficult start at Liverpool and then-boss Brendan Rodgers had been willing to let the midfielder depart for Fulham a little over 12 months after he signed.

And maybe Henry realised that, with the benefit of hindsight, he had made the call for the wrong reasons nine years ago.

He went from being seen as a transfer dud to being one of the most important and influential players of the modern Liverpool era.
