Jordan Henderson could be sold by Ajax this summer, just six months after signing for the Dutch giants.

The former Liverpool captain terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in January after struggling to settle in the Middle East, opting for a move back to Europe to boost his chances of making Gareth Southgate's squad for the upcoming Euros.

His new club, Ajax, have endured their worst season in years and found themselves inside the relegation zone ten matches into the season having won only twice.

Results have somewhat improved since then, though the famous club will end the campaign trophyless and are currently 35 points behind champions PSV Eindhoven with two matches to play.

It is now impossible for Ajax to quality for next season's Champions League and their chances of earning Europa League football are slim, reliant on scenarios involving Olympiacos and Porto to gain automatic entry into Europe's second-tier competition should they hold on to fifth place in the Eredivisie.

Ajax's struggles are set to have a huge financial impact, with both Henderson and former Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn potentially being sold as a result.

That is according to The Athletic, who state the duo are facing an "uncertain outlook" due to being two of the club's highest earners.

The Dutch side would reportedly prefer not to lose either player, though such steps must be considered to "help balance the books" during the summer transfer market.

Henderson has made a total of ten appearances since joining Ajax in January, while also becoming club captain, missing a handful of matches due to visa and injury issues.

Speaking after his arrival, the 2019 Champions League winner admitted his move to Saudi Arabia had not worked out and apologised to anyone he "upset" in the process of making this transfer.

"Well, I think a lot of people would like me to sit here and criticise the Saudi Pro League and everything that went along with that," said the 33-year-old.

I've got full respect for the league, Ettifaq and the people over there who made us feel welcome.

"But unfortunately these things in life sometimes just don't work out, in football and life in general.

I made a decision as soon as I knew the option [to join Ajax] was there, the decision was that this was the best move for me and my family at this time.
